Improve standardization with Heplon
Heplon scores each of your platform goals by how consistently services meet it. If services meet the same goal in many different ways, Heplon flags that goal as poorly standardized. This guide uses those scores to find scattered goals and consolidate them.
Before you start
- Sign in to the Heplon web app. See web SSO login.
Find the scattered goals
Open Goals & paths from the sidebar. The goals table shows each goal with a standardization level alongside reliability and velocity.
Look for goals marked red or yellow in the Standardization column. These are the goals where services are spread across many different paths.
Open a goal and read its evidence
Click a red or yellow goal to open its detail page. You can see what paths there are and how many services use each path or no documented path at all. A red or yellow standardization rating indicates that different services use different ways of achieving the goal.
Decide how to fix it
Use what you found to choose one of two fixes.
- Consolidate onto a path you already have. If one documented path is the right standard, move the scattered services onto it. Click Migrate services, select the services, and choose the target path. Heplon will open PRs for you.
- Document a new path. If no existing path is the right standard, define one. Click Add documented path, then migrate services to it once it exists.
Confirm the improvement
As soon as Heplon detects that services are less spread out over different ways of achieving a goal, the standardization score will improve.
